The Caribbean Beach Resort was first Moderate resort built at Walt Disney World and rooms are a little bigger than others (+ 26 square feet). It opened in 1988 and has about 2,100 rooms. Caribbean Beach is the most spread out of all the Disney resorts, so it takes some walking to see the whole thing. The food court, restaurant and main pool at Caribbean Beach are in one central area.

The daily rack rate on rooms in 2010 range from $149 (standard view, value season, weekday) to $274 (Pirate-themed room, water view, New Years Day) and a hundred combination’s in between (plus King-size Bed can be $25/per night more) That is why planning, using a good Disney travel agency and finding the best specials is important. A recent article announced summer resort special pricing for May 2 to Aug. 14, 2010. Average room discounts include 15% (Value), 20% (Moderate), 25% (Deluxe), and 30% (Deluxe Villas) off the rack rates, but the number of rooms is limited.

Recently Disney refurbished hundreds of rooms in the new themes like Finding Nemo and also your own Pirates of the Caribbean experience (well, maybe not). Lliving on Mactan Island provides that resort atmosphere, due to all the resort hotels, yet it is close to great medical facilities and upscale shopping malls across the bridge in Cebu City. Housing costs are lower on Mactan than on Boracay.

PANGLAO ISLAND

This island is across a short bridge from the much larger island of Bohol, which is approximately a 1/12 hour fast-boat ferry ride from Cebu City, or a short airport ride from the Cebu domestic airport. Panglao Island has a population of around 60,000 and is generally associated with Alona Beach, a strip of resorts and dive centres on the southern side of the island. Diving is what draws tourists and retirees to Panglao Island.

There are many resorts and the cost of living is substantially less than on Mactan Island. On the down side of course is that the island is more remote and requires a boat or air trip to get to the medical and shopping facilities of Cebu City.

SUBIC BAY

This area has rapidly become a favorite retirement area, especially for retired US military personnel and for Koreans. Until 1992, Subic Bay was the base for the huge 7th Fleet of the US Navy. These days it is in the process of being remolded into a tax free foreign trade zone and a modern tourist destination. A modern new superhighway was completed in 2008 which has cut the travel time from Manila by an hour. This provides great access to all that Manila has to offer, yet permits retirement in a smaller resort oriented community with all that has to offer. The population is now in excess of 200,000. The presence of Koreans is largely due to the construction in 2006 in Subic Bay of a large Korean shipbuilding plant. Housing costs have risen considerably in 2008 and 2009, yet they are significantly below Manila costs. There are lots of retired military people living in this location.

PUERTO GALERA

Puerto Galera, located just a few hours drive south of Manila, has a small population of around 30,000, and is one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines. Divers especially visit there in droves. Diving is king at Puerto Galera, with drinking close second. Beaches are numerous, but they lack the real resort style white-sand. The area is known for its great diving and its great night life. Watering holes, music and all kinds of nightlife are everywhere in Puerto Galera. Cost of living and housing is on the low end in Puerto Galera, as compared to the other beach resort retirement areas.

They also have security personnel patrolling the beach and throughout the resort. Staff are marvelous. They are everywhere, always greet you, and seem truly happy to help.

A white sand beach is well maintained, and the deluxe beach-front suites provide guests with magnificent views of the ocean. All units have verandas which offer a pleasant and private opportunity to relax. A roped-off swimming area offers protection from boats and jet skis.

A centrally located pool is provided for those who don’t care for the ocean. It is large enough for the adults, but shallow enough for the youngsters to use in safety.

Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort offers extensive, well-kept grounds. Amenities include spa, lounges, cafes, bars, beach front massage cabana, and pleasant landscaping throughout. Tours and island hopping are available on request. Scuba outings can also be arranged. A rental shop provides scuba and snorkeling gear as well as boats and jet skis.

Pros: Facilities are clean and secure, with genuinely friendly and helpful staff. Grounds are beautifully landscaped. Guest rooms are spacious and well equipped. Great beach has pleasant, relaxing view. An excellent buffet breakfast is provided. Rates are very reasonable for a resort of this caliber.

Cons: Rooms could do with upgrading. Floors are worn from constant exposure to beach sand. Televisions are old and have a limited selection of channels. Tubs and fixtures could stand to be replaced. On-site dining in the evening is limited and expensive. Although only approved canvassers ( tours etc.) are allowed on the beach, others lurk just off property, harassing guests with offers of every description.

Overall rating: Excellent! Pros far outweigh cons.

As dinner is buffet and costly if purchased at the door, it might be worthwhile  to include this as part of your package.

While on the beach there will always be staff (beach butlers) more than eager to please you with drinks, rose water sprays, fresh fruit and more. Every lunch I had by the beach was marvelous; I became addicted to the coconut shrimps and grilled fresh fish. And appreciate this: All the furniture at the beach and elsewhere outside is high quality word – NO PLASTIC!

Ah, the food at the RP! It is like having access for all meals at the world’s topmost restaurants, especially at the French restaurant where I ate the best beef, lamb and seafood dishes I have ever had; the two chocolate desserts are to die for. The food is absolutely fantastic. There is also a full array of room service treats available. But what is even more impressive is that you can make all kinds of special requests and mine were always welcomed and fully satisfied. Several times I asked for things not on the menu and they were happily provided, even if it meant the staff going to one of the other restaurants.

Ah, the atmosphere of genuine friendliness! You will surely have opportunities to have enjoyable conversations with the top hotel managers as well as workers performing the full range of jobs at the property. I had the most rewarding conversations with the general manager, food and beverage manager, executive chef, sales manager, head gardener, and countless bartenders, wait staff, beach staff, and grounds workers. There is an openness at the RP that makes you feel like you are deeply appreciated as a guest. You really will be treated like royalty. Yet you will not experience anything snobby or pretentious in this opulent resort.

Here are a few more memorable features: The hot tubs are not only beautifully designed but their setting looking out over the ocean is without parallel. The piano players during dinner in the French restaurant and during the afternoon tea on the terrace, and the local Jamaican band by the beach at lunch, make you feel that you really are staying at a place fit for the super rich. The bathroom amenities are the best I have ever had. The in-room bar is stocked with a wonderful array of soft and hard drinks. The nightly entertainment is both sensuous and soothing. All kinds of water sports are available; the glass bottom boat ride is a must. There is a well-equipped fitness center. At the full-service spa I had the best massage ever. Because the hotel is small you never have to deal with crowds or delays; you personally are always a number one priority of all the staff. You will feel special! Especially when you get a free foot massage on the beach in a special enclosure.

At the end of my stay I booked my next vacation at the RP, which is a testimonial to how great this hotel resort is. And my evaluation is shared by many others, explaining why this resort has won many awards and is rated as one of the top ten all-inclusive resorts by the highly regarded and useful Trip Advisor website community. Arriving in Siquijor was like going back in time. To get to the resort, you should hire a tricycle to get the real feel of the island. The resort does offer free pick up from the pier, but we decided to rough it and get the feel of the place. The Island has no modern malls or stores but rather what you would see back in 1950s Manila. Small towns like Siquijor and Larena ( Used to be the capital ) are just a few of the sites to see on the way to the resort. These towns have everything you need for everyday life, just in a rural setting that starts the relaxation process. The small homes scattered along the road really bring you back in time, although there are a few larger homes peppered in along the way. The town of Enrique Villanueva is very rural and there is onlt the wet market and a few small stores where you can purchase basic items you may need during your stay. The people all smile and you automatically feel as if you are part of a family.

When you arrive at the resort you approach a large wooden gate approx. 2 1/2 meters tall. You can’t see what is on the other side and it keeps you guessing as to what to expect. Then they opened the gate and the view is amazing. The grounds are beautiful with a backdrop of the ocean. We were greeted by the owners Scott & Cecile and after telling them about ourselves we were brought to our room. We walked down a path of concrete stepping stones outlines with black river rock and was in awe at the surroundings. When we got to the room it was down by the water and had beautiful Mahogony furnishings and a beautiful hardwood floor. We turned on the Aircon right away, grabbed a beer from the mini bar and just sat down on the patio gazing out at some fisherman casting their large bamboo fish trap into the ocean.

After sitting there in a meditative state for who knows how long, we decided to get a bite to eat at the Firefly Cafe. Located at the top of the property overlooking the entire property, you can see the Island of Bohol and Cebu as well as a few Volcanos in the distance. the cafe is located at the main house where the owners live and it is stunning. We ordered a sandwich and looked at the dinner menu while we ate. It is suggested that you place your dinner order early as all the food is prepared fresh and depending on what you order, they may have to go directly to the fisherman or rancher to get it for that evening. We ordered the Firefly chicken. After lunch we went back down to the room and took a nap.

We woke up and got ready for dinner. The sunset was amazing. Even though the resort is on the east side of the island, the clouds were a beautiful shade of reddish purple with other spectrums of color mixed in. We had a wonderful dinner ( a culinary delight ) and topped it off with desert and coffee.

That evening we walked down the stairs and walked the shoreline. We watched as the local fisherman searched the rocks and coral for eels and other creatures to both eat and use as bait. After about 30 minutes we went back to the room, called it a day and looked forward to the days ahead.

Located on Siquijor Island in Libo, Enrique Villanueva, the Firefly Cove Beach Resort is a all inclusive Green & Environmentally friendly resort located on approx 1 Hectare ( 2 acres ) of private, beautifully landscaped ocean front property. Comprising of only 4 spacious rooms it offered the ultimate peaceful getaway with out all the noise and crowds of large resorts.It had newly built lavish Mahogany furnishings and en suite bathrooms, air conditioning, ceiling fans and in room minibar. There was a gourmet restaurant which served Philippine dishes, Italian, American, Fresh seafood and Barbeques. It also has a full bar with many hard to find drinks.

Firefly Cove Beach resort was a romantic resort nestled on a private cove of powdery white sand beach and flat bedrock, in a quiet rural community that boasts a protected Marine Sanctuary where we were able to dive and snorkel and see all the splendid array of coral formations and other marine life. Such as Sea turtles and Giant clams. It was the greatest getaway for us and enabled us to head on home and feel refreshed and anew.
